Plasma cutting of metal

Plasma cutting is a cutting technology that allows you to quickly and accurately perform even the most complex metal processing tasks. It is the most efficient technology for producing metal products for many industries (construction, mechanical engineering). Using plasma cutting, you can manufacture metal structures of any purpose and complexity.

Key Advantages of Plasma Metal Cutting

  • Speed of work: Most blanks for cutting have a thickness up to 25 mm. In this case, their processing speed is about twice or even more compared to oxy-fuel cutting. Moreover, when the metal sheet thickness decreases significantly, the speed can exceed oxy-fuel cutting by up to 12 times. These advantages significantly increase productivity and save time.
  • High and quality recording speed: This characteristic is very important when cutting metal products. With plasma cutting, it is about 2 seconds. For comparison: oxy-fuel cutting takes about 30 seconds at a temperature of at least 1000 degrees. The short interaction of the tool with metal is beneficial because in a couple of seconds, the material does not have time to deform as it might in other methods.
  • Minimal slag formation during work, which is easily removed.
  • Easy control system for cutting helps maintain the correct tool height and good speed.

Time and Cost Savings

Plasma cutting allows simultaneous work with several sheets, which significantly saves time. This method can process different types of materials: aluminum, stainless steel, copper, and many others.

Notably, plasma systems are safe to use. They do not use combustible gases, open flames, or produce much heat. This significantly reduces risks for operators working with hot metals. The heat-affected zone is only 2 millimeters.

All the characteristics of plasma cutting positively affect costs during secondary material processing. Work is done qualitatively, quickly, and universally. For many tasks, these advantages are more desirable than others.

For each metal processed by plasma, there are specific features. For stainless steel — large diameter round blanks can be obtained; mechanical methods cannot cut stainless steel sheets in shaped forms. For titanium and titanium alloys — no formation of hard intermetallic phases.

Plasma cutting of metal has its features and advantages compared to oxy-fuel and laser cutting:

  • High metal processing speed;
  • No deformation flows on the cut surface;
  • Ability to process ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys;
  • No additional processing of finished products needed;
  • Ability to cut any geometric shapes and figures;
  • High cutting accuracy (+/- 0.25 mm) and hole coaxiality (no more than +/- 0.1 mm);
  • High reproducibility of parts (accuracy within +/- 0.1 mm);
  • Minimal negative environmental impact;
  • No thickness limitations as with laser cutting.

Maximum sheet metal dimensions: 1500 x 3000 mm; thickness up to 22 mm (thicker sheets use gas cutting).

Gas Cutting Method

Gas cutting is quite popular and economically viable. It is also called oxy-fuel cutting because the metal is thermally affected by oxygen. A jet of oxygen follows the heating and removes residual liquid oxide. Initially, the upper edge of the part is heated. Depending on the chemical composition of the material (e.g., steel), its ignition temperature varies from 1000 to 1200 degrees Celsius.

Advantages of the oxy-fuel metal processing method:

  • Low processing costs;
  • No need to work on edges after the procedure;
  • Presence of straight and diagonal cuts at different angles;
  • Ability to cut thick metal sheets.
