Potato and vegetable washing machine — a universal washer designed to clean a wide range of fruit and vegetable products. This industrial washer effectively and gently removes soil contamination and small stones from vegetables. Industrial washers for potatoes and vegetables can be produced in various sizes and capacities to meet different operational needs.

Today’s market sets a high standard for product quality. As a result, companies engaged in processing vegetables, berries, and fruits for freezing, canning, or simply storage face the critical issue of product washing.

The potato and vegetable washing machine can be used both as a standalone unit and as part of a technological processing line (complex) for vegetable processing.

The washing operation is considered a key step in food production, and the final product quality depends largely on its effectiveness. The washing process not only cleans the fruits and vegetables from contaminants but also reduces the concentration of bacteria and microorganisms on the surface, significantly extending shelf life. Brush washing additionally polishes the surface, making vegetables and fruits more attractive—and therefore more competitive in the market.

Vegetable washing equipment is classified by control principle into the following types:

  • Automatic washing machines — fully automated processes. The washing process occurs without operator involvement. Used for large-scale production volumes.
  • Semi-automatic washing machines — the washing process is carried out under the control and direct involvement of the operator. Typically, the operator loads and unloads the product and monitors the washing time.

By operating principle, washing machines are classified into the following types:

  • Drum-type washers;
  • Conveyor washing machines;
  • Brush washing machines of the bunker type;
  • Brush washing machines of the conveyor type;
  • Paddle washing machines;

Drum-type washers consist of a rotating perforated drum positioned at an incline, into which vegetables and water are fed. Due to gravity and the drum’s tilt, the vegetables gradually move through the drum and are discharged into the vegetable receiver. Washing occurs through the friction of the vegetables against each other and against the drum walls.

This type of machine is suitable for potatoes, carrots, and other vegetables resistant to damage. Washing in such a machine is relatively gentle, so some dirt may remain in crevices (such as potato eyes, edges of carrots and beets, etc.). Additionally, vegetables can get damaged, which reduces their shelf life.

To improve cleaning quality and reduce product damage, rotating perforated brushes are installed along the entire inner surface of the washing machine drum. Additionally, one or more brushes can be installed inside the drum cavity, which significantly enhances the washing effectiveness.

Conveyor washing machines consist of a conveyor belt on which vegetable or fruit products are placed. As the products move, they are abundantly sprayed with water under pressure or submerged in water. This equipment is suitable for washing most vegetables and fruits, except those with delicate structures. For handling delicate products, the conveyor belt is replaced with a mesh belt. Water is applied from above onto the mesh at moderate pressure. Such a mesh conveyor allows washing delicate products like grapes and mushrooms, which would be challenging to clean using other types of machines.

Brush-type washing machines of the bunker type are primarily used for washing firm vegetable products as well as fruits before processing. The device consists of a water-filled tank with rotating brush rollers located on the sides (and in some models, at the bottom). In machines of this type, selecting the appropriate brushes allows for very intensive cleaning with partial polishing of the vegetable surfaces.

Brush-type conveyor washing machines, when equipped with properly selected brush bristles and rotation speed, can be used for washing very delicate products (tomatoes, bell peppers, peaches, etc.). These machines consist of a conveyor with closely spaced rotating brush rollers, over which the product moves and is washed. Such systems can be used both for wet washing and dry cleaning. Water supply systems can be of the following types: water sprayed onto the rollers or from above, or the rollers may be partially or fully submerged in a water bath.

Such systems can also be used exclusively for polishing. For example, on potato washing lines, a brush machine may be installed after the drum washer specifically for polishing. This equipment is also excellent for polishing carrots and apples.

Blade washing machines consist of a tank inside which rotating blades gently mix the product and wash off surface contaminants. To improve cleaning quality from adhered dirt, pressurized water with air bubbles can be supplied into the tank.
